Season 2 Lock happened Tuesday

From StarCraft2.com

“The Season 2 lock also means that Season 3 is right around the corner. During morning maintenance onTuesday, July 19, Season 2 will end and Season 3 will begin. Season milestone rewards will be locked in at this time, and bonus pools will start over. Hidden skill ratings used for matchmaking and league placement will carry over from the previous season, so if you’ve completed placement matches in a previous season you will only need to play one new placement match after Season 3 starts.”

Diablo III: Book of Cain

From Kotaku

“There’s still no firm date on Blizzard’s next entry in the Diabloseries, but at least one of the game’s official tie-ins, Diablo III: Book of Cain, is expected to arrive in 2011. So what is Diablo III: Book of Cain?

It’s not a novelization of the story of Diablo III, but an "’in-world’ artifact from the Diablo universe," written by series mainstay Deckard Cain. Book of Cain is, according to the official description, "Cain’s formal record of this greater tale—a dissertation on the lore of the Diablo universe, told by one who has witnessed and participated in some of the epic events that make up the eternal conflict between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells."

Amazon.com has a release date of November 15 for Diablo III: Book of Cain, which could offer insight into Blizzard’s plans to releaseDiablo III, the game, on PC and Mac. We’ll have more information on Diablo III and itsbeta program in August, so stay tuned.”

Project Titan: Labeled a Casual MMO

From Kotaku

The people who make MMO juggernaut World of Warcraft have another massively multiplayer online game in the works, a game they’re calling Titan for now. Blizzard calls it "awesome" and "ambitious." One analyst calls it "casual."

That analyst would be Stern Agee’s Arvind Bhatia, who writes that Blizzard Entertainment’s next products are "expansion packs for Starcraft and World of Warcraft, a new Diablo game, [and] a new casual MMO" that are "likely be released in the next 12 to 24 months." Bhatia clarified with Gamasutra that the "casual MMO" he was referring to was, indeed, Titan.

With World of Warcraft appearing to have reached its player-base cap and Activision more reliant on Call of Duty to be a success, a newer broader market for Titan would make sense—even if we don’t know just how "casual" this game is expected to be.

And with more games pursuing a free-to-play model, how will that jibe with Blizzard’s supposed casual-leaning MMO development plans?

Why are in-game seconds faster than real life seconds? I understand that the default speed is set to "faster" but why wouldn’t Blizzard just change faster to normal and have the real life seconds match up with the in-game seconds?

RexSplode
My brother and I are having a hard time deciding on something. We can’t decide what tiers the different units are. He believes that Archons are a tier 4 unit. In my opinion they are not, nor is there really such a thing as tier four, with the possible exception of Motherships.
He believes that it is tier four because you need a gateway, cybernetics core, Twilight council, and Templar archives/dark shrine, and you need at least two units to create one Archon.  If you were to follow that reasoning I figure an Ultralisk is a tier 5 unit because you need a Pool, Lair, Infestation Pit, Hive, Ultralisk Cavern. Clearly this is bunk.
Just wondering what tier you guys think an Archon is. I think it’s a tier 2 unit.

MoOdY
Ok, so. I’m a Master’s Terran player, and I’m horrible at this game.
Ok, probably not, but I FEEL TERRIBLE at it.
I watch too many streams, read up on too many strategies, and overall know too much about the game to enjoy playing.  I notice every single mistake I make as it happens, and I know everything I should be doing, but am not good enough to do it, and it enrages me.
I don’t want to quit playing starcraft because I really enjoy the pro scene, I like thinking about the game, and I like playing competitive games, but if I can’t enjoy it because of my own overly self criticizing personality…. wat do?

Carter
Hello Garret, Kyle, possibly Mork.

I just got the game and i took my placement matches for 1v1 and got placed in gold because my first match i won because the other guy quit. and the second guy i won because he made no air defense. But then i got killed in the next three matches. They placed me in gold where i loze and loze and loze. what do i do? PLEASE HELP!

I just turned eleven and got it for my birthday.
Love The show,
Carter

Only if Mork’s here: Pinstar

Pinstar here again. Thank you very much for your advice Mork. I have a follow up comment and question.

In response to your horror story of losing your fully upgraded tier three units to a stalker ball, I suffered from that a lot in my bronze days. I learned that neither of a stalker’s ‘proper counters’ (Zerglings and Ultras) ever did the job properly of countering them. However, Hydras seemed to do the trick. A ball of hydras would (given even food counts and upgrades) melt a stalker death ball of relatively equal size. When I made Hydras the backbone of my army, that is when I finally ranked up into silver. The fact that hydras are ‘light’ units, and thus don’t suffer from the stalker’s bonus vs armored makes them take very little damage from the stalkers. While they might not be able to catch fleeing/blinking stalkers, they can’t be kited with the range upgrade.

My question is as follows: I will give your advice of roaches + baneling bombs a serious try, but I find that my drop micro is sorely flawed. For awhile I was tying to go with drops to make up for my hydra’s main weakness (speed) but I ended up making them less effective because my micro related to drops was so off. What specifically do you do when you do drops (banelings or otherwise) both in gathering up the units efficiently, and queuing up the actions to drop them/ carpet bomb them efficiently?

Thanks for your tips and suggestions Mork (And Garret and Kyle too)

For the swarm!

Team Liquid gives us a preview of the NASL Finals

iNcontrol leaves NASL
From TeamLiquid.com“Geoff  ’iNcontroL‘ Robinson leaves the us-american topleague NASL. One of the most important persons behind the project, who promoted it in february, will not be part of the team after NASL Season 1.

He told this decision after his NASL-cast yesterday. In the future he will performe as a pro-player, no more as a caster, and therefore he is switching to the EG pro-gaming house. He is also planing to compete in "awesome" international events like the DreamHack or the HSC3.

What this means for the NASL is completly obscure. As iNcontroL wrote above the second season is safe. He will also make some guest appearances.”

Branmatt Tournament
Hey!

I love listening to your podcast- I listen to it weekly when I mow because it makes the job less boring.

I was hoping you would be able to advertise a tournament I am running on the next podcast episode.

The details are on this website: http://binarybeast.com/xSC21107064
If you do mention it on your podcast, an easier web address is: http://www.theopenimmortalcup.tk/
If you wouldn’t mind giving out basic details, that would be great!
Also, it would be uber-ly over the top awesome if you played- I would enjoy casting your games (and you can show the true skill you have!
Thanks!

Todd
Garrett, Kyle (and Mork?),

Thanks for providing all your wonderful commentary over the last 35 or so episodes that I’ve been listening to you all.  I’ve always liked that your show has a casual feel to it.

I remember in a previous episode where you thought a gamer that was in his upper 20s was getting old.  I couldn’t help but lol a bit.

I’m an old school gamer, growing up with the good ol 8-bit NES and enjoying the evolution of gaming, throughout all the consoles, rise of the PC, 3D graphics cards, internet, all that stuff.  Now, at 38 years old, I find myself scurrying for time to play.  I’ve got a 2 year old son, 3 month old daughter, a wife that has no love for gaming and a semi demanding job.  HOWEVER… The hour or two every few days is still enough to keep me up on my SC2 game.

Just so you have something to look forward to, I can attest age won’t prevent you from getting into diamond leagues or getting a lot of achievement points.

Heavy caffeine will likely be your friend though for sneaking in some extra hours late at night. :0

http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/profile/744945/1/Technodynamc/

I now play as random btw… loving zerg swarms (even though I am more efficient as terran).

Game on guys!  …and thanks again for the info and the laughs.

George from the EU
Hi Garret, Kyle and hopefully Mork!
Its George here, from the EU servers and I have recently had a lot more time to play starcraft and get involved on the chat channel. We have had a boost in numbers on the channel at both weekends and week nights. Im sure I can speak for myself and many of us on the EU server in saying that we have been having a great time as of late and I can only thank you guys!
I have met some awesome guys and whilst having fun at starcraft I am improving quite rapidly too.
I also want to give a big shout out to Veni (pronounced Ven-eee) for being a total hero and helping out us lower league guys.
I just thought I would inform you of the good things happening on the EU server!
Also, thanks in advance for keeping me sane as I have a 400 mile round trip drive back down to university coming up and I shall be listening to your podcast all the way!
Love the show as im sure you can guess.
George

SupplyCap’n
Hi guys,

I’m a silver level Terran player and I have a question about your gaming set up.  More specifically, what type of computer and mouse do you use and why?

I ask this because I feel that my set up is a little unconventional from most SC2 players.  I’m currently playing star craft on a 24 inch imac with the standard apple keyboard and I’m using a 12" wacom graphics tablet instead of a mouse.  I know this might seem weird, but I happen to love it.  And I dont know what you guys think about using a tablet instead of a mouse, but I highly suggest you try it out if you have one.  Anyway, just wanted to share that little tid bit of info in case I’m not the only one out there that chooses to forgo the use of a traditional mouse.

Cheers,
Brandon aka SupplyCap’n
